Landmines kill and injure thousands of people each year, yet it costs just £1 to clear a square metre of mine-contaminated land. Each pudding sold generates £3 which goes towards helping to solve the global landmine crisis.
Frederick Nobbs of Wimborne, Dorset (pictured, on left) heard about the Rotary Club of Cwmbran Vale Christmas Pudding Appeal in 2007 and wrote a poem to remind us how much buying a pudding this Christmas could change lives and allow children to play free from fear.
BUY A CHRISTMAS PUD!.gif)
It was a lovely sunny day
"Please can we go out to play"
"Only if you don't go near the woods"
"Mum, I always try to be good"
Now the ball has been kicked too hard
Deep into the wood, not like their back yard
The little girl bent down to pick a flower
Did they feel the blast, did they feel the power?
A mother weeping, deep in shock
In her trembling hands a bloodied frock
Six little coffins lined up in a row
The victims of a war they didn't know
The land mine inventor who created these
Can he ever really sleep at ease?
Soldiers too must take the blame
Land mines kill and land mines maim
In the fields and woods so many shrines
Final refuge from those dreaded landmines
Please let the children play in peace
No more greed and anger must we teach
So please buy a Christmas Pud
It can make a difference it really could
To clear those mines from field and wood
To help others do so much good
Buy a Christmas Pud!

In partnership with the Rotary Club of Cwmbran Vale, with the leadership of Tony Pead and Brian Forster, we are running our third Christmas Pudding Appeal.
Last year’s campaign was a great success and Rotarians demonstrated their commitment to a world free of landmines and other unexploded ordnance, raising £14,000. The official handover was held on 29 July, with the cheque presented by RIBI President Ian Thomson.
This year the campaign looks like being another great success and early indications are that we will exceed last year’s total.
We have been overwhelmed by Tony’s dedication to this project and cannot thank him enough. Thanks to him - and you, we have been able to clear 38,000 square metres of land.
Over the next two years we hope to raise £200,000 to clear contaminated fields in Kosovo. Kosovo gained independence in February of this year. However, large areas of the country are still inaccessible because of unexploded cluster munitions and unexploded ordnance. With in-country mine action partners we will be clearing two mine fields within easy walking distance the city of Peja.
The clearance project was formally started this month and we do not underestimate the hard work needed by our deminers and fundraising teams to ensure we can successfully complete the demining programme.
With Christmas a little over ten weeks away, now is the time to buy your pudding and support the people of Peja and No More Landmines.
